I was born and raised in Amsterdam. I entered the renowned Rietveldacademie
school of art when I was 18 to study painting and drawing.
Because I had always
wanted to know everything about evolution and how such a simple mechanism could
lead to the complicated world we live in, I decided to also follow a study of
biology at the University of Utrecht. During this time I met my husband. We got
married and started a family. I continued with my studies and for several years
I assisted my husband in his veterinary practice as well.
Very few veterinary practices in the Netherlands worked with a computer in
1982.
We did. We wrote most of the programs necessary to run an efficient practice.
We maintained all of our patients' data on two floppy disks. Later we got
better computers, better programs and more hard disk space. I began to use
graphics and various drawing programs, including: CorelDraw and Adobe
Illustrator, Photoshop and Pagemaker. In the meantime we raised four children, I
continued to study, and eleven years after I started, I graduated.
The subsidiary subjects I studied were mathematics and informatics. I wrote
several computer programs and papers about population biology, sociobiology and
game theory. Sociobiology is the part of biology that tries to find an
explanation for animal behaviour, using evolution theory. Game theory clarifies
how two or more different genetic forms of the same character can coexist
within one population.
When my youngest daughter was three years old, I started drawing and painting
again. For some time I taught children how to draw in small groups. I also
began making illustrations for children’s books, school textbooks and
magazines.
WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU?
I am skilled in making illustrations for promotional material, presentations,
publications and exhibitions. I can design papers, interactive web sites and
PowerPoint
presentations, including brand icons (logos), cartoons, infographics and
animations. I design covers for children’s books, theses and magazines.
